History
During the Second World War, a network of tunnels was speciallly created underneath this Victorian fort. At the time of D-Day it housed the Combined Operations Underground Headquarters. From here, the progress of the Allied invasion fleet was co-ordinated and monitored. The headquarters staff included personnel from all three services, and members of the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) formed a major part of the staff.
Paranormal
The D Day Tunnels really is a location of mystery and intrigue and with so many reported sightings of ghostly activity alongside the sounds of distant radio communication it is an intense place to spend the night. Many people have reported paranormal activity in these vast tunnels but perhaps the most sinister is that of a sudden black mass that descends on unsuspecting individuals leaving them terrified. Reports of a WRNS who fell to her death down the stairs still haunts the tunnels – photo evidence can be seen. One tunnel that has been blocked off contains the body of a trapped solider. No one knows who he is.
