History

God’s House Tower is the 10th century Gatehouse into the old town of Southampton. The building is grade 1 listed. It was originally called Saltmarsh Gate near God’s House Hospital. The Gatehouse soon became God’s House Tower. Following a French raid on the town in 1338 defences were strengthened and the gateway reinforced. God’s House Tower was extended in 1417 to carry cannons and eight gun ports. The tower was also responsible for making gunpowder and gunshot in the 17th century. The building had gone into disrepair and in 1786 it became the towns jail. At this time, the tower was known as Lambcote Tower and prison. The building stood empty until 1876 when the harbour used it for storage although the ground floor was used as a mortuary. In 1957 the building became a museum.
