History

The Hare & Hounds was built during the reign of Elizabeth the 1st in 1590. When it was built it was a single dwelling on a considerable estate. The first recorded occupant was Gabel Hywett. He was described as a farmer and a dairyman of the parish of Peasmarsh. There were several outbuildings and a stable block by 1695. The house had fallen into a state of dilapidation and extensive work was carried out with the Thatched roof removed and replaced with tiles and bricks. In 1702 the house with adjoining land was purchased by Barnabus Fawkener, who is recorded as a brewer and a beer retailer of the parish of Peasmarsh. In 1703 ciders were granted to Barnabus Fawkener on condition that he remain closed on the sabbath. The house was registered an ale house in 1787.

In June 1871, Robert Barnes, the carpenter of Peasmarsh, sold the Hare & Hounds together with a shop and nearly 3 acres of land on which he built three cottages.

In 1924 the Hare & Hounds was sold to Star Brewery and in 1938 the Hare & Hounds was granted a full spirit license. The Hare & Hounds has undergone many changes since it was first built, but still remains the same character that it has done for centuries. In 2014 the Hare & Hounds is under new ownership where bed and breakfast and new camping facilities opened the end of May 2015.

Paranormal

The landlord has reported poltergeist activity with wardrobe doors opening on their own, kitchen cupboards and microwave door opening, sharp objects, including knives, tin openers, have moved or disappeared, never to be found. Plates and cups have moved and disappeared, hearing footsteps running up the stairs with nobody there. Strange goings on in the cellar where there is a well that has been covered over. On our Hexcom device, the word ABADDON came through, so we will be conducting the investigation with some caution. We are excited to announce we will be able to investigate the barn and stable areas for the first time.

It is documented that a young man called Harry a family member of the house who died when he was 22 in the war, his guns still remain in the pub. His spirit still remains in the old part of the pub.
